Are sleep consultants covered by insurance?

Sleep consultants in the United States* are not covered by traditional insurance because we are not providing medical advice and do not diagnose your child (nor do we have diagnostic codes to submit to insurance companies).

*I’m putting a disclaimer here that you may find sleep consultants who have other professional licenses can provide sleep consulting services that can be submitted to insurance. I know a psychologist in Canada that does this!

Sleep Consultants Covered by Insurance:

Now, even though we are not covered by insurance companies, families have been able to get their sleep consultant services covered by their HSA or FSA account.

Here's how you can make the most of these financial tools to ensure your family's well-deserved rest:

  1. Understanding Your HSA/FSA: Start by familiarizing yourself with the ins and outs of your HSA or FSA. These accounts are designed to cover various healthcare expenses, providing you with a flexible financial cushion for your family's well-being.

  2. Exploring Eligible Expenses: HSAs and FSAs typically cover a wide range of healthcare services. While they primarily focus on medical expenses, certain non-diagnostic services, like baby sleep consulting, may qualify if they contribute to the overall well-being of your family.

  3. Check HSA/FSA Guidelines: Navigate the specific guidelines set by your HSA or FSA provider. Some may have variations in their coverage criteria, so understanding these guidelines is crucial.

  4. Communication with Your Provider: Reach out to your HSA or FSA provider to explore coverage possibilities. Ask questions about the eligibility criteria for non-medical services and seek clarity on how baby sleep consulting may fit into their coverage framework.

  5. Documenting Medical Necessity: In some cases, documenting the medical necessity of the service can strengthen your case for coverage. Collect any relevant information or documentation that highlights the potential health benefits for both you and your baby. You can do this with your pediatrician by having them write. a letter you can submit to the HSA/FSA company.
