How many naps for an 11 month old?

An 11 month old baby is busy, busy, busy, and is ready to take the world by storm!

Though your baby may not be walking yet, they often have figured out how to get around in other ways like super speedy crawling, cruising the furniture, or just wiggling their way around the room. So close to their one year birthday, they often have also figured out ways to communicate with their loved ones either by hand signals like waving bye bye, or maybe even saying their first words. With so much happening by way of their development it’s important to make sure your 11 month-er is getting adequate sleep to keep up with their busy life! 

SO how many naps should they be having at 11 months?

All these developmental changes impact their sleep patterns. Typically, an 11-month-old baby will require 2 naps a day, usually one in the morning and one in the afternoon. 

Average Sleep Needs and How many Naps for an 11 month old:

  • 13-14+ hours of sleep in a 24 hour period

  • 2.5-3 hours of sleep in naps

  • ~11 hours overnight

  • 3-3.75 hour wake windows in between sleeps

Signs of Readiness for Nap Transition

As an 11-month-old approaches the one-year mark, new tricks may include resisting one of the two daily naps, taking longer to fall asleep at night, or consistently waking up early in the morning. Although these can be viewed as signs of an impending nap transition, it is estimated that only ~17% of 12 month old babies are actually ready for one nap schedule. Instead of making that leap just yet, you can play around with nap totals and wake windows, capping the first nap at 60 minutes and allowing the second nap to be the longer one, as well as increasing the second wake window to 3.5-4 hours. These things together can buy you a couple more months with the two nap schedule. 

Establishing a Routine for 11 month old

Creating a consistent nap routine is essential for an 11-month-old. A regular schedule helps babies predict when it's time to sleep and provides stability. This can include having a calming pre-nap routine, such as reading a book or putting on a sleep sack. These babies are alert and curious and do not generally like to stop what they are doing for sleep, so having this routine can help to transition them to sleep.
